Hokies Battle, but Fall to #14 Miami

Virginia Tech played a good game on Wednesday night, but ultimately couldn’t overcome Miami’s talent, experience and size.  The Hokies fell to the #14 Hurricanes 73-64 on Wednesday night in Cassell Coliseum.  Tech dropped to 11-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play.  Miami improved to 16-3, and they are unbeaten in the ACC with a 7-0 record.

The Hokies led 32-22 late in the first half, but a late 7-0 run by Miami cut it to 32-29 at halftime.  The Canes and Hokies went back and forth in the second half, but ultimately it was Miami who pulled away down the stretch.

Erick Green paced all scorers with 30 points.  He was 11-of-20 from the field, and 5-of-8 from three-point range.  His five three-pointers set a new career-high for the talented senior.  He also had three assists and no turnovers in 37 minutes, while limiting Miami’s leading scorer – Durand Scott – to just five points on 2-of-10 shooting.

However, sophomore guard Shane Larkin dropped 25 points on the Hokies, and he was 5-of-10 from three-point range.  He and Green went back and forth throughout the entire game, but it was Larkin’s team that came out ahead in the end.

“Erick Green is one of the best point guards in the nation,” Larkin said following the game.  “We knew he was going to rise to the occasion.  It was fun going back and forth with him.  We have a lot of respect for each other.  We were talking out on the court.”

Robert Brown scored eight first half points, knocking down all three of his field goal attempts.  However, he went scoreless in the second half.  Cadarian Raines finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, and played a very good overall game against a huge Miami frontcourt.  Jarell Eddie added 14 points and four rebounds for the Hokies.

It doesn’t get any easier for Tech, as they travel to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina on Saturday.  Tipoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will be televised by the ACC Network.

  1. Still to much one on one offense and usually one big under or around the basket to rebound when shots are going up.We seem out of position on way to many plays. If you are not the primary shooter, then hit the boards. At our shooting rate their is going to be a lot of rebounds available.

  2. ‘Twas size & depth that won it for Miami. Good effort by our guys but they were seriously out-manned. Dear JJ frontcourt recruits…hurry up & get here!
