Virginia Tech’s biggest goal in 2013 will be to reestablish a running game, and I don’t mean by crashing 260-lbs quarterback Logan Thomas into the line on every other play.  The Hokies have to find a consistent running game with their tailbacks, otherwise the ceiling of the offense will be very limited.

Obviously that can’t happen without at least decent run blocking up front, but we’ll leave that conversation for another day.  Shane Beamer and presumed offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler are going to have a lot of players to evaluate this spring.  Unfortunately, they’ll only have 15 practices to do so.

As of right now, Virginia Tech is projected to have six scholarship running backs on the roster this spring.  4-star recruit Drew Harris did not meet NCAA Clearinghouse requirements after spending a semester at Fork Union Military Academy.  At best, he will enroll at Virginia Tech in June.  However, this is the second time Harris has failed to qualify; once out of high school, and once out of prep school.  It’s been said that a paperwork issue was the main cause, but I heard well over a month ago that Virginia Tech wasn’t expecting him to qualify.  Call it a hunch, call it an educated guess, call it whatever you want, but I’m not expecting him to play football for Virginia Tech.  I definitely hope I’m wrong on that, because he’s a very talented player.

This article will operate under the assumption that Drew Harris will not play football for Virginia Tech in 2013.  That’s the only safe assumption we can make at this point, as he hasn’t cleared the NCAA Clearinghouse as of yet.
