Holland Fisher doesn’t have much experience playing safety, but he drew praise for his play there at last week’s The Opening presented by Nike Football.  ESPN.com National Recruiting Analyst Tom Luginbill called the 6’2″, 200-pound Fisher a “ball-hawking machine” in his position recap (subscription required) of the event.

Fisher attended Clover Hill (Midlothian, VA) his first three years of high school, playing linebacker each of the years he was on the varsity level.  He’ll play middle linebacker this coming season at Manchester (Midlothian, VA), the school he transferred to this past spring.  Given the fact that the athletic and speedy Fisher has primarily played in the front seven in high school, he was more than happy to gain experience in the defensive backfield last week.  After all, safety is the position Virginia Tech is recruiting him to play.

“I don’t have too much practice at safety, so it was really good to get to practice there.  I was learning coverages, getting to know my responsibilities as a safety, and maturing more at that position,” said Fisher.

The Opening, which is an invite-only training event featuring some of the nation’s top recruits (mostly class of 2013 but a few class of 2014 members as well), lasted four days.  A tour of Nike Headquarters highlighted Day 1 (the players received an impressive amount of Nike gear, including shoes, shorts and shirts).  A SPARQ combine took place on day two.  Day 3 included a practice and the pool play of a 7-on-7 tournament.  And Day 4 marked the conclusion of the 7-on-7.
