Catching Up With VT’s First 2013 Commits

Hokies head coach Frank Beamer covets those in-state recruits, and that’s exactly what he got in Tech’s first two commitments in the class of 2013.  Both players attended Virginia Tech’s junior day on February 18 and committed later that night.

In terms of timing, Clover Hill (Midlothian, VA) star Holland Fisher had initially planned on following in the footsteps of teammate Joel Caleb, who waited until Signing Day 2012 to announce his college choice.  But after returning home from Saturday’s junior day in Blacksburg, the junior linebacker/safety prospect decided against waiting.

“Me and my brother were talking when we got home.  I said I think I might go ahead and commit today,” recalled Fisher, who chose Tech over offers from Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.  “I called Coach Shane, told him, and he told me to call Frank Beamer.  I did, and I said I was proud to be a Hokie.

“I was going to wait until Signing Day, but I have been to many schools, and Virginia Tech is where I felt most comfortable.  It just felt right.  When I went there, my family enjoyed it.  I grew up as a Virginia Tech fan, so this is a dream come true really.  It’s still kind of unbelievable.”
