Notes From The VHSL Division 4 State Title

A resilient Christiansburg (VA) squad fell just short in its comeback attempt in last Saturday’s Division 4 state championship game against Briar Woods, but the Blue Demons, led by Virginia Tech-bound quarterback Brenden Motley , certainly made the final few minutes exciting for those in attendance at Liberty University’s Williams Stadium.

Game Summary

When the two teams took to the field on Saturday, I have to admit I thought it would be a long day for Christiansburg. Briar Woods trotted out bigger players and a deeper team, and their athletes, led by Stanford-bound senior defensive back/wide receiver Alex Carter, looked impressive as well.

Christiansburg didn’t back down an inch. In fact, the Blue Demons struck first when senior running back Zach Snell bounced a handoff outside and sprinted down the sidelines for a 73-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Briar Woods answered with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Trace McSorley to the aforementioned Carter, and another McSorley touchdown pass gave the Falcons a 14-6 lead with 8.8 seconds left in the second quarter.
