Benedictine’s Meyer Still On VT’s Radar

Charley Meyer added over 20 pounds and reduced his 40 time to 4.52 seconds (timed at the VTO Combine last spring) this past offseason. The time and effort he put in paid big dividends individually and for the Benedictine (Richmond, VA) team, as Meyer was a big-time playmaker for the Cadets in 2011. The 6’2″, 205-pound senior wide receiver has not decided his college future just yet, but it looks like he’ll have some options.

“It was nice to see for Charley because he worked so hard in the offseason, and he improved dramatically from a speed standpoint and a strength standpoint,” Cadets head coach Greg Lilly said of Meyer’s senior season performance. “From an offensive standpoint, he was our go-to-guy. Besides receiver, he ran the Wildcat. We would snap it directly to him. There were reverses and returns. We used him as a decoy in throwing situations. To his credit, he was able to make some plays.”

One of Meyer’s best games of 2011 came against St. Christopher’s, which is set to take on Liberty Christian Academy in the VIS Division 1 state championship. Meyer totaled 211 yards of offense and two touchdowns (one rush, and the game-winning touchdown reception) as the Cadets defeated the Saints.

“He can run past people. I think that surprised people, particularly in the first four games of the season,” Lilly said. “Teams would see him physically and maybe get lulled into thinking he was a possession receiver, but he was able to consistently get behind corners and safeties until people would put two over the top. He worked really hard at running routes. He has had some really good wide receiver coaches here, and that’s helped him too.”
