New Jersey Star Commits To Hokies

In search of another tight end in its 2011 class, Virginia Tech has scored a good one in Ryan Malleck , a 6-5, 235-pound prospect out of Point Pleasant Boro High School (Point Pleasant Boro, N.J.). Malleck, rated a 3-star prospect by ESPN.com, Rivals.com, and Scout.com, committed to the Hokies this afternoon over offers from Maryland, Miami, N.C. State, Rutgers, Vanderbilt and Virginia, among others.

Committed to Maryland since last August, Malleck reopened his recruiting when Ralph Friedgen was let go. In the end, Virginia Tech would be the choice over the Terrapins and another ACC foe.

“I sat down with my parents and my coach last night. It came down to Maryland, Miami and Virginia Tech. I weighed out the pros and cons. I pretty much made the decision to commit to Virginia Tech last night,” said Malleck, who informed head coach Frank Beamer and offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring of his decision this afternoon.

Malleck took official visits to all three finalists. Last weekend’s official to Virginia Tech was his first ever experience in Blacksburg, and it was then that the standout senior began to lean towards the orange and maroon.
