Saturday afternoon, the Hokies steamrolled a Wake Forest team that has fallen
a long way from its perch as 2006 ACC Champions. The Virginia Tech offense
rolled up video game numbers in yardage and points, while the defense showed a
troubling propensity for giving up big plays that could cost them down the road.
Tech has Duke next weekend, but after that, November is going to be a wild ride.

It’s best not to analyze a game like this too closely, because (stop me if
you’ve heard this one) things are never as good as they seem, and never as bad
as they seem. On Saturday, things were very, very good … on offense, at least.

Commentary on a game like this can rapidly fall into meaningless
back-slapping praise. Tyrod Taylor was really on the money, wasn’t he? Wasn’t
that a great catch by Logan Thomas? Dyrell Roberts had a breakout career game.
Danny Coale was running free all day long. David Wilson looked great. Etc., etc.
You get the point: there is no point.

The bottom line is that this game was exactly what it needed to be: an
injury-free, confidence building blowout that padded the stats, added another
tick to the ACC win column, and was the most stress-free game this season. Wake
Forest is a bad team, so this 52-21 whipping was just what we hoped going in.
