Lewis, Host of Other Commits to Visit

Virginia Tech is expected to host 10 commitments making official visits this weekend. At least one recruit – 6-4, 230-pound tight end/defensive end Jerome Lewis – will be making his first ever trip to Blacksburg. Lewis, a top recruit out of Bishop Kearney High School (Rochester, N.Y.), looks forward to celebrating his 18th birthday in style.

“I know it’ll be my first time on campus,” said Lewis, who turned 18 yesterday. “I want to get to know the students and get to know the environment. Of course, everyone who has made a verbal commitment wants to at least visit their school of choice once. You want to feel like you can stay there for four or five years.”

A productive player on both sides of the ball, Lewis made 18 receptions for 425 yards and five touchdowns from the tight end position in his senior season. He racked up 13 sacks at defensive end but projects to play offense at Virginia Tech.

When he committed in May, Lewis chose the Hokies over offers from East Carolina, Minnesota, Pitt, Purdue and Syracuse. Colorado, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Penn State offered after the commitment was made, but Lewis maintains that he is solid with his choice. Opposing coaches still keep in contact, but this weekend could prompt the Bishop Kearney star to completely end his recruitment.
