Collins One of the State’s Best

Brooke Point (Stafford, VA) defensive end/tight end Lanford Collins quietly has become one of the most highly recruited prospects in the state of Virginia’s 2009 class, totaling double-digit Division 1A scholarship offers according to head coach Jeff Berry. The 6-4, 240-pound senior simply goes about his business on and off the field.

“He understands the whole process and the seriousness of it, but what makes him unique and liked by all of his teammates is that he is down to earth. He also has a quirky personality. He has a good sense of humor,” Berry said of Collins. “He is not real vocal to be honest with you, but the kids don’t expect that out of him. He doesn’t care about stats. He cares about playing football. It would be easy to get caught up in recruiting and get a big head, but that is not the case. He leads by example. That means a lot to me, the fact that he is on board with everything we’re doing.”

A running back and defensive back his freshman and sophomore seasons, Collins, who has certainly sprouted following his sophomore season, has become a big-time factor at tight end and defensive end for Coach Berry.

“He jumped up in size and filled out and matured, but he kept the athletic skill set of a defensive back or a running back,” Berry said.
