VT Recruits in Action at Southern Invitational

For most of the players at the Southern Invitational in Charlottesville, VA, this AAU tournament was a chance to get their names out there in front of recruiters from some of the top schools on the East coast. It is what makes AAU basketball so unique; the goal is not as much about the success of the team as it is about getting the players to the next level.

Virginia Tech commitments Erick Green , however, had no such worries. Having already made the decision to attend VT months earlier — Boggs on October 28 and Green on January 25 — the Southern Invitational was merely another chance to ball.

Just because the eyes of recruiting world were not squarely upon them, that did not mean that the two did not perform. Boggs and East Coast Fusion-Lemcke went 2-0 to win their three-team pool in the round robin before getting bounced in round one of the bracket-style playoffs by eventual 17U runner-up National Christian Academy. Green’s Triple Threat squad proceeded to go undefeated in its four-team pool before the Millbrook (Winchester, VA) standout suffered a sprained wrist. Green gutted it out for the Threat’s first round playoff game against Carolina Raptors-Woods, but, with its leader less than 100 percent, the Threat lost a late second-half lead and fell to the Raptors.

“I’m really a left-handed type of dude, and I really couldn’t do anything with it. I tried to shoot, and I really couldn’t focus on shooting, my hand was hurting me real bad,” Green said after the loss. Coach Stevens added that Green would have X-rays on the wrist to make sure no further damage was suffered.
