’09 Profile: Marlboro County High School (S.C.)

Marlboro County (Bennettsville, S.C.) finished the 2007 season with a 9-3 record, a region championship and an appearance in the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs. Head coach Dean Boyd returns a good group of talent next season, headlined by at least three rising seniors who could end up playing Division 1A football.

“We have three guys who are getting recruited the most, but we have as many as five or six who could be recruited pretty good,” Boyd said. “The three who are being recruited the most are Tariq and Tyrell Edwards and Kinsman Thomas. Tariq and Tyrell are twin brothers and their father, Bo Campbell, played at Virginia Tech [from 1988 to 1992]. Tariq is 6-4, 225 pounds and Tyrell is 6-4, 219 pounds. Kinsman is 6-3, 210 pounds.”

Tariq Edwards boast the same four offers – Clemson, N.C. State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Tariq Edwards is being recruited by most college coaches as an outside linebacker or defensive end, while Thomas is more of an athlete-type prospect.

Of Tariq Edwards , Boyd said, “He plays well on both sides of the ball. He is getting more notoriety for his defensive skills, but offensively he has great hands. He is very good as a wide receiver or tight end. He is also smart. He understands football and how to play the game. Where he plays in college will be up to whoever gets him, but there are things that stand out about him defensively. He makes plays. He had about four or five sacks last season, and he added about four blocked punts on special teams.”
