New Hampton Prep (N.H.) guard Kendall Durant had official offers from Colorado, Penn State, South Carolina and Tulsa, but the loyalty he felt with the Virginia Tech coaching staff ultimately put the Hokies over the top. The 6-3, 185-pound prospect signed with the Hokies on Wednesday, several days after making an official visit to Blacksburg.

New Hampton Men’s Varsity A head coach Peter Hutchins discussed Durant’s decision.

“There were a few things to it,” Hutchins said. “His recruiting really picked up when he got up here. I think he was getting a little tired of the process, but, most importantly, Virginia Tech was one of the first schools to really show interest in him during his senior year at Fairmont Heights. They continued to follow him over the course of the summer. A lot came down to how he did academically here, but he has been unbelievable. He takes five classes including two SAT prep courses and he has done very well. That gave them confidence to offer. I don’t think there were ever any questions about him as a basketball player.
