Anson County (N.C.) standout linebacker Barquell Rivers followed through and made a verbal commitment late this afternoon, just as Anson head coach Jody Grooms predicted to TSL earlier today. The decision? Rivers has chosen Virginia Tech over offers from Clemson, North Carolina and N.C. State, among others.

“I committed to Virginia Tech,” the soft spoken Rivers told TSL. “Their defense stands out to me. When I visited there, it just jumped out to me. I liked the field house and the facilities they have there. It just seemed like a perfect fit.”

Rivers, who says he is now 6-0, 215 pounds, will be a four-year starter on the varsity level. He started as a freshman. As a junior last season, Rivers made 130 tackles and had three interceptions. He earned all-state honors at the linebacker position. He was named all-conference his sophomore and junior seasons.

Rivers joins Hunter Ovens as the second top linebacker recruit to pledge to the Tech program today. Rivers is being recruited for the Mike position, while Tech likes Ovens for the Backer spot.
