Martin a Punishing Safety

George Washington-Danville safety Cameron Martin displays a laid-back demeanor off the field, however is anything but laid-back once he steps onto the gridiron. The 6-2, 180 pound blue-chipper’s hard hitting ability has caught the eyes of many Division I-A programs.

“I defer to what the colleges tell me, and they like the way he plays the run from the safety position,” GW-Danville Head Coach Dan Newell said in an interview earlier this year. “Cameron really fills the alleys. It’s one thing to get there, but he gets there and he’s a fearless tackler. One coach described him as ferocious.”

Martin believes playing quarterback on offense helps his ability on defense, enabling him to use his attacking style.

“I would say I’m aggressive,” said Martin, who tallied 72 total tackles including 42 solo efforts, had five interceptions and seven pass break-ups last season as a junior. He earned first-team all-region honors. “Playing quarterback gives me an advantage I think because I know what the quarterback is thinking or reading. It helps my pass coverage.”
